I loved the fact that, growing up, I never had an allergic reaction to anything noteable that I can remember. That is, of course, until I moved from Arkansas to Michigan. The climate change is such a dramatic difference, one from the other, that I began experiencing allergy symptoms the moment I got out of the car at our new house, which sat on five acres of land that wasn’t well tended and was full of trees and high grass and ill-kempt ponds. Five minutes outside and I was having a full-on sneezing attack that would last thirty to fifty sneezes long. And anyone who has had a sneezing attack knows that it’s just plain exhausting. Not only was there sneezing, but the itchiness I experienced was overwhelming. Even the roof of my mouth and my ears would itch, though the nose was by far the worst. I tried over-the-counter medications for a long time, testing something new every week because nothing seemed to be helping it. Then winter hit, and the allergies went away and I forgot all about it. Until the following August, when they all flared up again. This was when I knew I couldn’t do the OTC route again, wasting all my money, and I needed to see my doctor about an allergy medication prescrption. I had even previously tried claritin and alevert over the counter and those also had little to no effect in the treatment of my allergies. So my doctor presecribed me flonase. I was very hesitant to use a nasal spray, but she assured me she used it herself and loves it and it’s one of the only things she finds effective against her allergies. I asked her if the nasal spray was addictive or damaging to the nasal cavity and she assured me that it wasn’t, and those kinds of reactions were considered severe and very rare, so I gave it a shot. The first use of flonase was a lot easier than I thought. I was nervous about using a drug like this and worried it would feel wierd, or hurt or leave a bad taste in the back of my mouth and any other number of things, but it was honestly much easier to use than I anticipated, and the one good thing about this drug verses a pill is that you felt an immediate relief from your allergy symptoms, most specifically, the itchy and runny nose. I can’t say it was all that effective about the watery eyes and overall congestion, but I was happy just to have relief from the itchiness and sneezing which seemed to be the worst of my symptoms. I did experience one nosebleed and a slight sore throat about two weeks into taking the medication, and these side effects (especially the sore throat) were enough to have me seeking another alternative. I liked flonase because the results felt immediate, but it didn’t help all the symptoms, was very short term in its effectivness, and the side-effects, for me, didn’t seem to outweight what it actually helped prevent. I guess I’ll leave it for you to decide how you like it, but that was my story. Thumbs up for working on immediate symptoms, thumbs down for absolutely everything else. Rating: 5
